Tips for Dying Your Hair Fun Colors At Home

diy tutorial tuesday May 19, 2020

We’re fans of fun summer hair colors in my house. I generally stick with pinks and purples and my son likes greens and blues. What’s the harm in it? School is out and most dyes wash out pretty fast. Here’s what I know about the crazy color dyes I’ve tried.

First, with every one of the fun color dyes, it will work best and give the brightest results on pre-dyed blonde hair. Ever since that one time in high school when box hair dye turned my hair an unfortunate shade of...

How to replace the staples on plantation shutters

Do you have plantation shutters that don’t attach right to the center tilt rod anymore? Me too. Here’s how to fix it – it’s quick and easy and anyone can do it with a pair of needle nose pliers, or even a pair of tweezers. Maybe even just your fingers – you do you. I shared this on Instagram a while back, but I’m putting it here because I get asked so often!

Logo Design + How to Paint a Logo on the Wall

Friends, I've been designing logos for a looooong time. I like a clean, crisp, simple logo design, and I hate certain fonts for logos (ahem, Papyrus, Comic Sans, Bradley Hand). Those fonts have their time and place, but for the love, not in a logo!

*steps down from soap box*

This business needed a new logo, and then they wanted it painted on the wall. Their logo needed to be more versatile and modern and convey "flexibility". I'll go into the ins and outs of my process for...

How to Draw a Rose

It's Tutorial Tuesday and with Valentine's Day coming up, here's a quick way you can add a rose to the love notes you'll be writing.

Start with the bottom-most petal of the rose and move up and in and you go, finishing the flower with the overlapping back petals. Add the stem and leaves last. Make sure your petals come to a slight rounded point, and that's it! Now you can add some zhuzh to your love notes, or maybe just to your notebook while you're on conference calls.

We're focusing...

What is the Nerky Art Club?

Friends, The Nerky Art Club is opening in ONE WEEK! I pushed back the launch for 2 months for 2 reasons. First, I revamped my entire idea. Literally from the ground up. It's more robust and has more tutorials, more exercises, more everything. I'm pretty pumped about it, and I hope you are too! You can learn more here, and I can't wait for you to see it!

My second reason is that I didn't have the brain power to create something as big as this, as quickly as I could in the past. I wanted to...

Advent CLAWendar

diy holiday Dec 04, 2019

I knew I wanted to make an advent calendar focused around activities this year. I considered a lot of options like date-specific things that were planned each day, i.e. going to a Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert, but ultimately I decided that when I plan too much and get too technical, it becomes more stressful and I'm not about that life. Plus, the surprise factor is fun for both of us! Also, concerts are expensive *shrug*

Back in 2016. Wait, 2015? I can't remember. Doesn't matter. Back...

Easy DIY Coat and Bag Rack

diy home decor Oct 22, 2019

Friends, I made this coat and bag rack and if I can do it, YOU CAN DO IT! You can probably finish in a day, but you want to be sure to let the stain dry completely for a few hours before you hang it.

Tools:
- Saw - I used a circular saw to cut my board down to size, but if you're buying a new board then you can have them cut it in the store. It's usually free and will save you a step.
- Drill
- Stud finder
- Level

Supplies:
- 3" nails (8)
- Coat hooks like these
- Wood stain and stain pads (or an...

Living Room Update: Navy is the New Tan

Redecorating: cheaper than therapy and equally as effective. In my case at least. I updated my living room from a cardboard tan color to navy blue and that alone made SUCH a difference in the feel of the room, then I added new furniture, and what once was a space that constantly reminded me of what I lost, is now a space I can make new memories and move forward with my life on my own terms.

My living room was the place we all hung out all the time when Jason...

DIY Lego Storage Container

Originally Published on 2/15/19

This year we got to make valentine boxes for my son’s class party, and I’m pretty stoked that his is one we can continue to use for storage now that Valentine’s Day has passed. I love a good dual purpose craft. We also did Lego Valentines, so we kept the theme going by making a Lego themed Valentine container, too. We went through several ideas – how cute and easy would it be to use a kleenex box and make it look like a Lego brick?

Y’all, I’m not special. I’m not some woodworking goddess with tons of experience and a knack for building. I’ve literally never built anything in my life, except Lego sets. Do I generally know my way around basic power tools? Yes. Was building something like this mildly terrifying? Yes. Did I know how to build a structure before this? No. I’m just a woman who...
